MN Blues 2026 HOF Inductee George Moye

Moye plays bass on Bernard Allison's Loving You, to be released Oct. 16 just two days before hall of fame induction
No one is more deserving than Mr. Moye, my long-time bass player who has been my friend and big brother for a long time”— Bernard Allison Blues guitarist, singer and songwriter
George Moye, widely recognized as Dr. Funk and a celebrated bassist with deep Minnesota blues roots, has revealed that he will be welcomed into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame on Sunday, October 18, at a ceremony in Vadnais Heights. During his career, Moye assembled Ford pickup trucks at the company's St. Paul facility. In his off-hours, he carved out a reputation as one of the most admired bass players in the blues genre. This October, those two paths converge as Moye marks a pair of achievements within a three-day span.

Alongside the Hall of Fame recognition, Moye is also marking his contribution to Bernard Allison — the son of blues icon Luther Allison — whose upcoming release Loving You drops October 16 on Ruf Records. Moye provides bass on all 10 tracks as a member of Allison's core ensemble, joined by special guests Devon Allman, Larry McCray, Matthew Curry and Victor Wainwright.
Then, on Sunday, Oct. 18, the Minnesota Blues Society will formally induct Moye into the Minnesota Blues Hall of Fame at Jimmy's Event Center in Vadnais Heights. This distinction honors musicians whose contributions have left a permanent mark on the blues scene in Minnesota.
“I am very humbled by this honor. I have a lot of gratitude for being recognized for all the hard work I have put in over the years,” said Moye, “Knowing my work will always be documented there so future musicians and entertainers can see the legacy left behind and hopefully be inspired.”
Over the course of his musical journey, Moye has shared stages with numerous leading figures in blues.
Moye spent over three decades at the Ford plant in St. Paul, where he developed a discipline that he credits with shaping his approach to music. He retired from Ford in 2009, just two years before the facility shut down. Since stepping away from that job, Moye has devoted himself entirely to the music he had been performing all along.
“Working at the Ford plant taught me about showing up on time. It is something I learned at an early age, since I started there when I was 21 years old,” said Moye. “I learned to carry these principles into the music business as a musician, which helped me be on time knowing your role in the band and being respectful of the other musicians but most of all the music.”
For Allison, the more than 16 years he has spent collaborating with Moye represent something he deeply treasures.
“No one is more deserving than Mr. Moye, my long-time bass player who has been my friend and big brother for a long time,” said Allison. “Congratulations, Dr. Funk. You are a legend.”
Paul Peterson, a well-known Twin Cities musician and fellow bassist, also believes the recognition Moye is receiving is entirely appropriate.
“Since we’re both bass players, George and I don’t get many chances to share a stage. But I’ve had the pleasure of hearing him as a fan, and he’s always rock solid,” said Peterson. “His groove is right where it belongs, and he knows how to support both the song and the musicians around him. George is an incredible player and a true blues legend who shares his talent with audiences around the world.”
From his early days in Ohio to the Ford plant in St. Paul and then to stages nationwide, Moye looks back on his journey with a sense of reflection.
“This is truly an honor,” he said. “I am grateful I am still performing.”
