Michael W. Smith’s Christmas musical ‘Almost There’ debuts at Texas Amphitheater in December

When a Grammy-winning Christian artist lends his name to a holiday stage production, it’s worth taking notice — especially when it’s happening in a scenic North Texas outdoor venue that’s still writing its own story.

That’s the situation in Glen Rose this December, as Texas Amphitheater rolls out Almost There: A Christmas Musical, a live production featuring musical arrangements from Michael W. Smith, along with Wes King, Bradley Knight, and Luke Gambill. The show runs the first three weekends of December — from Friday, December 4 through Saturday, December 19, 2026.

Also worth a look: Terry Milla’s new film turns Election Day anxiety into an internal battle for civic duty and Third Space Improv earns autism certification, expanding inclusive creativity in St. Augustine.

Situated in the Paluxy River Valley, the production tells the Nativity story through the eyes of Mary, tracing her journey toward Bethlehem. It’s a familiar narrative, but one that organizers hope will land with fresh emotional weight when delivered through song and live performance.

For Arturo and Arleen Macias, who own the amphitheater, the holiday show is about more than filling seats — it’s a signal of what the venue aims to become. “We are incredibly excited to welcome families to Texas Amphitheater this Christmas season,” said Arleen Macias, Co-Owner of Texas Amphitheater. “Our vision is to create a place where people come together to experience outstanding live entertainment and make lasting memories. Almost There is a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays while introducing audiences to the exciting possibilities ahead for our amphitheater.”

The production’s creative team shares that ambition. “There’s something particularly meaningful about bringing the Christmas story to life through music,” said Patty Weaver, Executive Director and Producer of Almost There: A Christmas Musical. “We want audiences to experience the emotion, anticipation, and hope of Mary’s journey in a way that feels personal and memorable. Our hope is that families leave not only entertained but inspired by the message of Christmas.”

The venue itself adds to the appeal. Located at 5000 Texas Drive in Glen Rose, Texas Amphitheater seats roughly 3,280 guests across an open-air, multi-level stage set amid the natural scenery of Somervell County. The December engagement is part of a broader push to expand the amphitheater’s calendar beyond this holiday run, with concerts, theatrical productions, and community events planned throughout the year.

For families looking to start or continue a holiday tradition, the musical offers a chance to gather with friends, church groups, or loved ones for an evening of live entertainment with a seasonal message at its core.

Why it matters: This holiday production isn’t just a seasonal attraction — it’s a milestone for a venue working to establish itself as a regional entertainment hub. If the December run draws the crowds organizers hope for, it could set the stage for a more ambitious year-round calendar at Texas Amphitheater.
