Most artists seek out pristine studios with state-of-the-art acoustics, but UK blues-rock guitarist Adam Sweet found his muse in a far more unconventional space: a derelict Victorian mortuary. The building, which he purchased and transformed into his creative hub, lends its name and eerie atmosphere to his third studio album, ‘Mortuary Blues’ — a record that channels classic rock, blues, country, and soul through a uniquely haunting lens.
‘Mortuary Blues’ will be available on all major digital platforms,”— Adam Sweet
While the album’s title might suggest a grim listen, the collection itself is anything but morbid. Drawing on the timeless sounds of classic rock, blues, country and soul, Sweet’s songwriting is delivered with honesty and integrity, working with a diverse range of co-writers to bring fresh perspectives and influences to the project. From swaggering, groove-driven roots rock to soulful ballads, the record feels rooted in the past yet very much of its own time, tackling themes including the cost of living, burnout, our changing planet and the uncertain future facing the creative industries.
The foundation of the album was laid in a live setting, with Sweet’s touring band — Garry Kroll on drums, Paddy Blight on bass and Tom Hughes on organ — tracking the core performances at Momentum Studios in Plymouth with Josiah J Manning at the controls. From there, the sessions were transported back to The Mortuary Studio for overdubs, vocals and mixing. Sweet handled production and mixing duties himself, with the final master delivered by Alex McCollough at True East Mastering in Nashville.

Two singles have already given fans a taste of what’s to come. ‘Backstop’, a co-write with Nashville-based hit songwriter Hugh Moffatt, was released at the start of 2026 and has received extensive radio play across Blues, Roots and Country radio stations. The track earned a glowing endorsement from w21 Music, which called it “One of the year’s best singles so far.”
The latest single, ‘The Mortuary Blues’, has just been released and is already receiving strong support from UK Independent Blues Broadcasters, as well as being playlisted on Joe Bonamassa’s ‘Cutting Edge Blues’ Spotify playlist — a notable nod of approval from one of the genre’s biggest names.
‘Mortuary Blues’ will be available on all major digital platforms, Bandcamp and directly from adamsweetmusic.com.

Why it matters: In an era where digital production often strips away the human element, Sweet’s decision to record live with his touring band in a converted mortuary is a bold statement about the value of authenticity in roots music. With a Nashville mastering engineer, a co-write with a hit songwriter, and playlist support from Joe Bonamassa, this independently released album proves that compelling blues-rock can still find a wide audience without major label backing.
