Adam Nelson’s first novel praised as “an incisive, provocative, and robustly American debut.” Foreign rights to be presented at the 2026 Frankfurt Book Fair.

Huckleberry Jim is a sharp, darkly funny, and deeply relevant novel that takes on race, identity, and the stories America tells about itself.”— Anne Fonteneau, Chief Sales Officer at Blackstone PublishingNEW YORK, NY, UNITED STATES, August 14, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Workhouse Editions has announced that Blackstone Publishing will create the complete audiobook edition of Huckleberry Jim — recognized as a Publishers Weekly BookLife Editor’s Pick and the debut work from Adam Nelson — scheduled for October 6, 2026, matching the release of the hardcover, trade paperback, and digital formats. On its release date, Blackstone will distribute the audiobook broadly, ensuring immediate availability through Audible, Amazon, Spotify, Apple, Libro.fm, Chirp, Audiobooks.com, plus more than 150 digital retailers and library services, including OverDrive and Hoopla.
Drawing from actual occurrences and situated in 1991, Huckleberry Jim centers on a pair of performers — Axel Emerson, a white actor aged twenty-two just out of conservatory, and Moses Morton, a Black actor aged fifty-five with years of stage experience — who embark on a children’s theater run of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn across upstate New York and the Appalachian region. As this two-person troupe travels from school gyms to local playhouses, delivering Twain’s words to young audiences during the year of Anita Hill, the Rodney King beating, and the peak of cultural conflict, the miles between them evolve into a gradual reckoning involving race, acting, parenthood, and the price of embodying someone else’s role.
A confrontation with race, culpability, and the comforting narratives America uses to lull itself to sleep. Recommended for followers of Percival Everett’s James and Paul Beatty’s The Sellout.
Leon Nixon will serve as narrator for the audiobook, directed by senior audio producer Grover Gardner, featuring an introduction spoken by the author himself.
“Huckleberry Jim deals with performance, but it’s just as much about what lingers once the show concludes,” commented Adam Nelson. “The friction between these two realities drives the novel’s core, and Blackstone recognized that an audio format could make that friction impossible to overlook. We’re excited about this collaboration and couldn’t have asked for more capable partners.”
“Huckleberry Jim is a sharp, darkly funny, and deeply relevant novel that takes on race, identity, and the stories America tells about itself,” added Anne Fonteneau, Chief Sales Officer at Blackstone. “Adam Nelson has crafted two memorable figures in Axel and Moses, and we’re eager to bring their intricate journey to audio listeners through Leon Nixon’s compelling narration.”

Early Acclaim
“An incisive, provocative, and robustly American debut … capturing the spirit of Twain, social commentary marks every page with a steady stream of cleverly worded aphorisms and elegant analogies. Nelson honors the fathoms-deep American divisions that Twain marked and urges us to look closer rather than away.” — BookLife Reviews, Publishers Weekly (Editor’s Pick)
“At the story’s core is an interesting and convincing relationship. Nelson is adept at character development.” — BlueInk Review
“A blunt historical novel about the power — and limitations — of the arts to educate, connect, effect change, or create an escape. A thorny discussion about book censorship … is a discomfiting highlight.” — Clarion Reviews
The book earned a longlist placement for The Masters Review Novel Excerpt Prize, finishing within the top three percent of entries, and holds the Authors Guild “Human Authored” certification.
Launch Timed for Banned Books Week and Columbus Day Weekend

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn continues to rank among the most frequently challenged books in U.S. history.
Prior to publication, Nelson’s essay “The Word We Won’t Say and the Country We Won’t See” — addressing Twain, censorship, and American language — was featured in The Village Voice.
Adam Nelson is open for bookstore discussions, readings, and book signings, as well as library and festival engagements during Banned Books Week and through the autumn season.
