Were you aware that Ian is a devoted motorcycle fan? His passion for two wheels was so intense that he once operated his very own motorcycle firm.
Back in 1975, Ian founded Mantis Motorcycles, converting a lifelong enthusiasm into a commercial venture. Thinking back on those trailblazing days, Ian remembers:
“We'd work on machines until about 3 am, ending up with a couple of production Norton 750 Commandos and a bored-out 997… Mike (Egglington) built a special frame for that, made from Reynolds tubing, and welded it together in a criss-cross pattern that was state of the art. It was brilliant!”
Mantis Motorcycles had showrooms opened in both Bristol and Edinburgh, representing what Ian calls a fantastic and unforgettable chapter of his life.
Naturally, motorcycles are merely one fascinating thread in an extraordinary career that spans over 65 years. With his unmistakable voice, Ian has motivated countless fans across the globe. From his beginnings with The Javelins, through his memorable role in Jesus Christ Superstar, and onward to Deep Purple, Gillan, Garth Rockett and the Moonshiners, and Repo Depo, his musical path is deeply engraved in rock history.
