The writer of One Step Over The Line is now setting out to assist fellow true crime podcasters in building their audiences.
For more than 20 years, Ken Behr operated inside a high‑volume smuggling network before agreeing to cooperate with the DEA. Behr’s journey into that world began in the 1970s, when he was a teenager running his operation from his mother’s home. What began as a small venture eventually ballooned into a massive smuggling enterprise that Behr controlled for over two decades. During those years, he traveled the nation in a cigarette boat, raced cars, and flew on private jets, collaborating with some of the planet’s most notorious smugglers and crossing paths with everyone from Hollywood celebrities to killers.
Confronted with a mandatory minimum of 25 years behind bars, Behr decided to become a cooperating source for the DEA. He later chronicled that chapter of his life in the memoir One Step Over The Line, a title inspired by the 1970s tune “One Toke Over the Line.” The book, Behr’s first writing effort, covers both his personal story and the smuggling scene in South Florida during that period.

In the book’s author’s note, Behr also discusses grappling with post‑traumatic stress linked to those decades—an experience that, he says, took him by surprise after years of believing PTSD only affected other people.
Behr’s time inside federal probes and his direct understanding of large‑scale trafficking now guide his work behind the microphone. He launched Crime Nightly to bring that perspective to unsolved cases, missing person inquiries, and conversations with researchers and formerly incarcerated individuals.
