The cross-border black metal initiative Kogaion, which unites performers from Norway and Romania, has formally presented its inaugural record, Echoes of Black Silk Angels. This work offers a fusion of atmospheric and symphonic black metal, taking cues from Nordic customs and Romanian cultural legacy. A collaborative artistic vision drove the creation of this album, which intertwines atmospheric black metal with symphonic components and inspiration sourced from both Nordic and Romanian traditions.
This project assembles Norwegian musicians Rune Ødegård (Metalum) and Kåre Lund (Ronove Kare) alongside Romanian vocalist Maddox Ika. Their joint efforts concentrate on producing original pieces grounded in dark ambience, melodic structures, and themes tied to history and culture.
Echoes of Black Silk Angels comprises twelve original tracks that delve into mythology, the natural world, spiritual iconography, and the emotional resonance typical of underground black metal. The album is now accessible across all major digital streaming services globally.

Interviewer: For those encountering Kogaion for the first time, what defines you?
Kogaion: We are a Norwegian-Romanian symphonic and atmospheric black metal project united by a common creative purpose. Our aim extends beyond just music; we strive to construct an absorbing encounter where composition, visual art, and atmosphere are indivisible. To us, Kogaion is more than a band—it’s a continuously evolving artistic universe.
Interviewer: The name “Kogaion” naturally provokes interest. What prompted its selection?
Kogaion: We sought a name loaded with significance and mood. Kogaion represents enigma, ageless scenery, and the link between myth, nature, and creativity. It mirrors the identity we wish to forge through our music, without confining us to any particular historical or cultural reading.
Interviewer: Kogaion unites artists from Norway and Romania. How did this partnership come into being?
Kogaion: It occurred organically, driven by a mutual passion for black metal and creative expression. Geography ceased to matter once we recognized our shared vision. Our distinct origins became an asset, enabling us to merge influences that enhance rather than oppose one another.
Interviewer: Rune, you handle the music and lyrics. How does a Kogaion song originate?
Rune “Metalum” Ødegård: Typically, it starts with an atmosphere rather than a riff. I often picture a location, a season, or an emotion before I begin composing. The music develops from that mental image. Every track must serve the larger narrative the album intends to convey.
Interviewer: Maddox, you contribute both vocally and through visuals. How tightly are those two realms connected?
Madina “Maddox” Ika: For me, they are inseparable. When I create artwork or visual ideas, I constantly listen to the music. I want the visuals to feel like an extra dimension of the same tale, not mere embellishment. Each image ought to evoke the very atmosphere the listener hears.
Interviewer: Ronove, your role goes past drumming. You also crafted Kogaion’s official logo. What does visual identity signify to you?
Kåre “Ronove” Lund: Visual identity has always held weight in black metal. A logo is frequently the first thing people encounter. I wanted ours to feel natural, enduring, and unmistakably tied to the music. It should embody Kogaion’s spirit before anyone hears a single note.
Interviewer: Your first album is titled Echoes Of Black Silk Angels. What should listeners anticipate?
Kogaion: We hope they experience it as a complete voyage rather than a mere collection of songs. Each piece has its own character, but collectively they shape a consistent atmosphere. The record investigates themes like isolation, mythology, change, and nature’s emotional force.
Interviewer: Many groups describe their music as atmospheric. What does atmosphere signify for Kogaion?
Kogaion: Atmosphere forms the bedrock of everything we produce. It isn’t something layered on afterward. It guides the compositions, the artwork, the lyrics, and even the pauses between notes. If listeners shut their eyes and feel transported elsewhere, then we have accomplished our goal.
