This rising interest arrives in North Texas for the first time Saturday, Sept. 19, from 1 to 7 p.m., when the Texas Mead & Music Festival debuts at Scarborough Faire in Waxahachie. Tickets are on sale now. A share of proceeds supports the Texas Mead Association, which promotes education, collaboration, and the expansion of mead production throughout Texas.
Organized by Southwest Festivals—the team behind the nationally recognized Scarborough Renaissance Festival and Scarborough’s Hollow Fall Fantasy Festival—this single-day event offers award-winning Texas meads, live music spread across five stages, artisan shopping, educational sessions, and several of Scarborough’s Hollow’s signature attractions.

WHAT EXACTLY IS MEAD?
Mead is created by fermenting honey with water and yeast, and it predates both beer and grape wine by thousands of years. Often referred to as “honey wine,” it actually belongs to its own distinct category. Depending on the honey and ingredients used, meads can be crisp and dry or rich and sweet, still or sparkling—appealing to wine lovers, craft beer enthusiasts, bourbon fans, and adventurous foodies alike.
Texas honey gives each mead a unique personality. Whether from Hill Country wildflowers, East Texas forests, or mesquite blooms across the plains, the floral source of the honey shapes the aroma and flavor of every mead.

Thirteen Texas meaderies from North, Central, and East Texas communities will be featured at the festival, including Dancing Bee Winery, Rohan Meadery at Blissful Folly Farm, Breaking Brew Meadery, Fox & Raven Mead, Texas Longhouse Meadery, Valkyrie’s Kiss Mead, Bee Immortal Mead, Curmudgeons Mead, Bee & Brew, RenMead, Vinland Meads, Thorin’s Mead and Lonestar Meadery.
“People often don’t know what to expect from mead,” said Carlos Herrera, president of the Texas Mead Association and owner and meadmaker at Texas Longhouse Meadery in Wylie. “It’s incredibly diverse, and there truly is something for every taste. The Texas Mead & Music Festival gives people the chance to explore meads from across the state, meet the makers, and see for themselves why this ancient beverage is experiencing such a remarkable comeback.”

Admission covers Mead Education presentations held throughout the day in the Harvest Garden. Guests can learn how honey turns into mead, discover the crucial role honey bees play in agriculture, explore mead’s path from ancient civilizations to the thriving modern craft beverage scene, and—for VIP ticket holders—get an introduction to home mead making.
