New project inspired by the true-story memoir Soul of a Gangsta by Jamal “J. Diggs” Diggs explores the rise of Vallejo’s infamous Romper Room Gang, the emergence of Mac Dre, and an untold story of brotherhood, ambition, loyalty, music and survival.

LOS ANGELES — ONE Venture Group, Bronx Bridge Films and OTTera Media Group! (OMG!) today announced they are developing ROMPER ROOM GANG, an ambitious new entertainment project inspired by the true story and memoir Soul of a Gangsta by Bay Area rapper, entrepreneur and cultural figure Jamal “J. Diggs” Diggs.
Currently in development, ROMPER ROOM GANG tells the story of a group of childhood friends from Vallejo, California, whose lives became intertwined with street survival, crime, brotherhood and the beginnings of an independent music movement that would ultimately help reshape Bay Area hip-hop.
At the center of the story is J. Diggs and his journey from Vallejo’s Country Club Crest neighborhood through the rise of the Romper Room Gang, federal incarceration and, ultimately, his reinvention in music and entertainment.
Running parallel to that journey is the emergence of Mac Dre, Diggs’ close friend and fellow Vallejo native, whose music would become the soundtrack to a generation and whose influence would help give rise to the independent Bay Area movement later associated with Thizz Entertainment.
The producing partners are developing ROMPER ROOM GANG with the ultimate format and creative approach to be determined as the project moves through development.
Set against the cultural rise of Mac Dre and the birth of a uniquely Bay Area independent music movement, ROMPER ROOM GANG explores a world in which friendship, family, ambition, street survival and music become inseparable — and where the same loyalty that holds a group together can also carry life-changing consequences.
More than a traditional crime story, ROMPER ROOM GANG is a deeply human saga about childhood friends becoming family, doing whatever they believe is necessary to survive, and ultimately searching for a path from the streets into music, business and a more promising future.
“For years, other people have told our story. This time, you’re going to hear it from the people who actually lived it,” said Jamal “J. Diggs” Diggs. “The good, the bad, the brotherhood, and the music that gave us something bigger to believe in.”
The story begins with Diggs’ formative years in Vallejo’s Country Club Crest neighborhood and follows the evolution of childhood friendships into what became known as the Romper Room Gang.
As the stakes escalate, music begins to offer another possibility.
Money from the streets intersects with the early infrastructure surrounding an emerging Mac Dre, creating two parallel stories — one involving crime and survival, the other involving the beginnings of a fiercely independent music culture that would eventually reach far beyond Vallejo.
That journey ultimately leads to federal prosecution and years of incarceration for Diggs before his return to a dramatically changed Bay Area and his reinvention within music and entertainment.
Following Mac Dre’s death, the story enters another chapter as Diggs confronts grief, legacy, fatherhood, business, old loyalties and the challenge of creating a legitimate future without being pulled back into the survival code of his past.
“The story of the Romper Room Gang is one of those rare stories where music, ambition and real life collide in a way you simply can’t manufacture,” said Troy Brown of ONE Venture Group. “The moment has never been given the full cinematic treatment it deserves. At ONE Venture Group, we are privileged to be able to tell this story with the authenticity, scale and complexity of the people who actually lived it. I believe audiences everywhere will be captivated by what they see.”
“We lived in the Bay Area and experienced this era firsthand, so this story is personal to us,” said Lee Cummings and Jay O’Sullivan of ONE Venture Group. “It’s about brotherhood, survival, music and ambition, and we’re proud to help tell the real story behind the Romper Room Gang — a defining chapter of Bay Area culture that is still alive today.”
“The Romper Room Gang is the ultimate story of the streets. These men connected the criminal underworld to the rap game in a way no one had done before. These men had the attention of the FBI and the hood at the same time. This story has to be told,” said Christopher Brown of Bronx Bridge Films.
For OTTera Media Group!, the project represents the type of culturally significant intellectual property the company sees as having both a distinct point of view and the ability to connect with a broad global audience.
“This is exactly the kind of story we believe deserves to be told at scale,” said James DuBose, President of OTTera Media Group!. “The Romper Room Gang story is rooted in the Bay Area, but the themes of brotherhood, ambition, consequence, family and reinvention are universal. What excites us is the opportunity to take an authentic story that helped shape a culture and build it into premium entertainment that can connect with audiences around the world. At OMG!, we’re focused on building and partnering around culturally significant IP with the power to become something much bigger than a single project, and we believe this story has that potential.”
The creative vision for ROMPER ROOM GANG combines the scale and momentum of an epic crime saga with the intimacy and authenticity of a first-person memoir and the cultural specificity of a Bay Area hip-hop origin story.
Music is envisioned as an essential part of the storytelling — capturing not only the sound of an era, but the emergence of an independent movement that grew from the streets of Vallejo to influence artists, entrepreneurs and fans for generations.
ROMPER ROOM GANG is currently in development by ONE Venture Group, Bronx Bridge Films and OTTera Media Group!.
Producers on the project are J. Diggs, Troy Brown, Jay O’Sullivan and Lee Cummings for ONE Venture Group; Christopher Brown for Bronx Bridge Films; and James DuBose and Stephen Hodge for OTTera Media Group!.
The project is inspired by the true-story memoir Soul of a Gangsta by Jamal “J. Diggs” Diggs with EJ Burney.
Additional creative, production and distribution partners will be announced as development progresses.
