Accompanying the track is a live music video now streaming on YouTube. The song was captured during the band’s landmark show at Toronto’s iconic Massey Hall on November 18, 2023, and marks another step in the group’s weekly series of single and video drops leading up to the full album’s arrival on September 18, 2026.
Chest Fever is joined onstage by Bryan Barbarin, who performs the role of Van Morrison. Hailing from the celebrated New Orleans Barbarin musical dynasty, Barbarin fuses jazz, rock, and funk into a vibrant live presentation, earning him slots at SXSW, Sundance, and NAMM, along with performances in front of sold-out crowds worldwide. His lively stage presence and commanding vocals made him an ideal pick, and throughout “Caravan,” his theatrical background and outsized charisma shine, injecting fresh energy and a distinct flair into the song.
Horns arranger Jesse Audelo recalls “Caravan” as a standout moment: “I think one of my fondest memories of performing was ‘Caravan.’ I love that song—it’s always huge, everyone is singing along, and the whole band is completely locked in.” Canadian singer-songwriter Nicole Cerminara, another musical guest that evening, also singles out “Caravan” as one of the Massey Hall show’s top moments. “It was one of my personal favorites,” she says. “Bryan did a great job on that.”
The accompanying live video captures another show highlight: the easy camaraderie between Chest Fever guitarist Dan Cervantes and Barbarin. The two share a history going back to high school, which makes their onstage chemistry feel entirely natural. Barbarin also occupies a special place in the band’s story as the only original special guest from the 2017 production of The Last Waltz to return for the Massey Hall performance. His appearance connects the project’s earliest chapter—documented in the film The Beginning of the Beginning of Chest Fever, a playful tribute to Robbie Robertson’s famous line from the original rockumentary—with its latest evolution. “We felt Bryan Barbarin was the only person on the planet who could hold a candle to the original performance with Van The Man and The Band,” says Cervantes. “His persona is larger than life on and off the stage, and people still come up to us years later and say, ‘THAT song was the highlight of the entire five hour show!’” That shared energy between the artists onstage and the audience has always been a core part of the song’s appeal, and with its explosive crescendos and irresistible chorus, Barbarin’s take on “Caravan” nails that spirit.
Nearly five decades after Van Morrison’s original performance, Chest Fever’s version of “Caravan” therefore captures the same thrill, musical freedom, and joy that made it a defining moment of the 1976 concert—and of 2023’s show as well.
