What do 400 weddings have to do with building a better decision-making tool? For Derek Hui, the answer is everything — and it has nothing to do with romance or finances.
The Tokyo-based entrepreneur is building Clarity, a decision-making tool with a waitlist open since March. The name came from what 400 weddings taught him.
TOKYO, JAPAN, November 5, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Derek Hui, a Canadian entrepreneur and content creator documenting his life in Tokyo on YouTube, is currently developing Clarity, a decision-making tool whose waitlist at getclarity.tokyo has been accepting sign-ups since March. In his video descriptions, Hui frames the offering plainly: “If you want confidence from knowing your next move, join the Clarity waitlist.”

That name, Clarity, was not chosen at random. Hui traces it back to a lesson learned over 12 years spent photographing weddings. In an episode published in April about the more than 400 weddings he shot, he explained that the difference between couples who stayed together and those who didn’t “came down to one thing. It wasn’t love. It wasn’t money. It wasn’t the venue. It was clarity.” A month earlier, while introducing the tool on camera, he tied the concept to his own personal track record: “Everything I wanted in life was on the other side of one question. Can I keep doing this long enough? The formula I found was simple. Turn the hard into a habit. Then turn the habit into something easy. This is how I’ve done it for fifteen years. Consistency comes from confidence. Confidence comes from clarity.”
Clarity emerges from a career that has already spanned multiple industries. Hui started working at McDonald’s at age 16. At 21, he taught himself photography and went on to found the Mariner Agency, a Toronto wedding studio that captured more than 400 weddings — 300 of which Hui shot himself. From ages 24 to 31, he ran NSTMGMT, an artist-management company built with William Nguyen, who performs as Photo Will. Hui used his photography earnings to fund the development of singer Anders, whose 2018 single “Love No More” with Loud Luxury earned triple-platinum certification from Music Canada. His first e-commerce venture — a ceramic oil diffuser co-designed with a business partner — failed, but he went on to launch several other e-commerce companies.
In October 2023, at age 34, Hui left Toronto for Tokyo after a nine-day visit that March convinced him to choose Japan over a previously planned move to Los Angeles. He now documents his rebuilding process on his YouTube series, which launched in September 2025 and releases new episodes roughly every two weeks, produced alongside Tokyo-based editor and videographer Darren Ha. Clarity is being developed in parallel with his e-commerce businesses, complemented by a newsletter called Life’s So Rich and a community growing around the YouTube series.
The waitlist is open at getclarity.tokyo.

Why it matters: Hui’s journey from wedding photographer to music manager to e-commerce founder to tech entrepreneur illustrates a modern blueprint for career reinvention — one that prioritizes clarity over conventional success metrics. In an era of endless options and information overload, his argument that confidence and consistency flow from clarity may resonate far beyond the startup world.
