Estani Honors Her Grandmother’s Legacy With New Cumbia Version of “Tú de Mí Te Acordarás”
The tracks “Tú de Mí Te Acordarás” and “Déjame En Paz” appear on Estani’s 15-song album Tu De Mi Te Acordarás, a tribute to her grandmother Rosita Lopez. Lopez was a Conjunto and Bolero singer active in San Antonio during the 1960s and 1970s, and her music was nearly lost. The album, together with a documentary bearing the same name, reworks songs from Rosita’s recording history and features spoken segments where she recounts parts of her life. Both singles are currently up for Latin Grammy consideration.
Raised with a mix of Conjunto, Tejano, Rancheras, boleros, jazz, soul, R&B, and pop, Estani has made the South Texas sounds tied to her grandmother the focus of this project. The album, in her view, restores Rosita’s voice to a historical narrative that frequently disregarded women’s roles.
The link is particularly strong on “Tú de Mí Te Acordarás.” Composed in 1967 by Anita R. Ovalle expressly for Rosita Lopez, the tune lived in the family’s musical recollection for many years before it became the title track and emotional heart of Estani’s album and documentary. Estani sees it as a thread linking “three generations of women” – Ovalle as the writer, Rosita as the intended recipient, and Estani herself performing it almost sixty years later.
Following the initial Conjunto recording, Estani imagined a more festive Cumbia arrangement. Grammy-winning producer Beto Martinez (of Grupo Fantasma) handled production and reworking of the fresh version, preserving the original tune, narrative, and South Texas character. Martinez also mixed the two featured singles.
The music video for “Tú de Mí Te Acordarás” relies on family photos and historical stills as its base. AI-driven animation adds gentle motion to the pictures, bringing scenes from before Estani was born to life. “Seeing these photographs move felt surreal and incredibly moving,” she remarks. Estani views the method as a link between passed-down memory and today, not as a way to change the history captured in the images.
