Japanese musical ensemble Himekami marks its 45th anniversary in 2026 with the release of Ultimate Best, a comprehensive collection spanning the group’s entire catalog. The 32-track compilation arrived on major streaming platforms on June 24, accompanied by a new music video that reimagines one of their signature compositions.
Since their debut in 1981, Himekami has carved out a distinctive niche in the world of contemplative and healing music. Their sound blends digital orchestration with ethnic musical influences, creating atmospheric compositions that have captivated international audiences for nearly half a century. A key element of their identity is the integration of kobushi, a traditional Japanese vocal technique, alongside what the group calls the “Himekami Voice,” a natural vocal chorus approach introduced in the late 1990s.
Ultimate Best arrives in two editions: Voice Edition and Instrumental Edition. The collection encompasses internationally recognized works alongside previously unreleased material, including a new composition titled “Pilgrimage to the Phantom City” and rare recent live recordings. For longtime fans, the compilation offers both a celebration and a rediscovery.
The accompanying music video draws imagery from Tohoku’s sacred landscapes and cosmic visuals, reimagining one of the group’s beloved pieces through themes of “prayers transcending time and space.” It is a fitting visual companion for music that has always aimed to transport listeners beyond the everyday.
The ensemble operates from a studio nestled in the Kitakami Mountains of Japan’s Tohoku region, the area that inspired their name, derived from Mt. Himekami in Iwate Prefecture. Following the original founder’s passing in 2004, creative direction passed to Yoshiki Hoshi, who has maintained the group’s artistic vision while guiding it into a new era.
