Those queries reside at the heart of “In a Room Full of Dreams,” the latest title single from Black Lotus’s forthcoming concept EP of the same name. Set for release on September 14, the song weaves through atmospheric synth-pop, dark pop, and alternative electronic textures, investigating the strange intersection where perception, memory, dreams, and imagination start to blur.
Central to the track is the concept of synesthesia—the neurological condition where stimulating one sense can involuntarily trigger another. A sound may be perceived as a color. Words might evoke shapes, textures, or spatial forms. Numbers and letters can carry their own distinct hues or personalities. For Black Lotus, synesthesia transcends mere scientific curiosity. It becomes a lens through which to consider music itself: a medium capable of transforming invisible experiences into vivid landscapes.
That idea runs throughout the entire EP. “When Sound Becomes Color” examines the crossing of sensory boundaries, while “Synthesia” plays deliberately on the word synesthesia, blending interconnected perception with the project’s synthesizer-driven electronic language.
“In a Room Full of Dreams” envisions memory in almost physical terms. A room becomes filled with echoes of another person; fragments of experience and objects that seem to hold emotional weight long after their original moment has faded. Absence and presence coexist. The past is no longer merely recalled; it is felt. That dream logic is mirrored in the production. Thai Black delivers the vocals on ‘In a Room Full of Dreams,’ following the vocal duet with Geert Coppens on the EP’s first release, ‘Dreams of Snakes.’ The single also extends Black Lotus’s collaboration with Belgian musician Geert Coppens of Micrart and Micrart Studios, whose history in Belgium’s experimental electronic, darkwave, and coldwave scenes includes projects such as Twilight Ritual, Autumn, and Linear Movement. Coppens previously joined Black Lotus as the featured vocalist alongside Thai Black on “Dreams of Snakes,” the EP’s debut release.
The outcome reflects a recurring quality in Black Lotus’s music: songs that can be introspective without becoming static, and dreamlike without losing their physical energy. Dreams themselves operate in a similar way. A remembered voice can become a space. A color can hold an emotion.
The room also reaches backward in time.
