An introduction to the independent Newfoundland singer-songwriter now reaching listeners in Japan through Apple Music’s editorial playlists

ST JOHNS, NEWFOUNDLAND & LABRADOR, CANADA, August 3, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — The independently released single “You Like” (dropped July 31, 2026) by pop-punk/alt-rock solo artist MADELINE has climbed into the Top 5 of Apple Music’s official “New in Punk” editorial playlist, securing the #4 spot out of 269 songs. This feature is now active on Apple Music’s Japan storefront and additionally ranks at #19 of 319 on Japan’s dedicated “Made in Canada” playlist.

MADELINE (Madeline Salter) is a self-released pop-punk/alt-rock singer-songwriter hailing from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador — Canada’s easternmost provincial capital, situated on the Atlantic Ocean’s edge. She started performing when she was five years old and put out her self-titled debut EP in 2020 at age fifteen. As an independent artist, she writes, performs, and produces all her own music.

Her sound blends fast, infectious pop-punk energy with a raw, powerful vocal delivery — straightforward and authentic, never polished or crafted to win anyone over. Fans of Avril Lavigne, Paramore, Olivia Rodrigo, or Alanis Morissette — artists MADELINE has directly cited as influences on her writing — will recognize her music as belonging to that same tradition.

Her songwriting has also been publicly noted, in her only Canadian news feature to date, for addressing themes of social isolation and mental health (The Laker News, March 2024). Tracks like “hold me while i cry” and “MESSY” connect with listeners who have experienced loneliness and are searching for a sense of belonging — the reassurance that whatever burden you carry, you are not alone in carrying it.

In 2023, MADELINE was the sole Canadian chosen to perform at the Blow Out Show for Berklee College of Music’s Aspire summer program, a showcase limited to the program’s top 50 students from thousands of international applicants.

Closer to home, MADELINE has already been gaining traction. MusicNL nominated her for Pop Artist of the Year in 2024 and Rock Artist of the Year in 2025, and recently revealed two additional 2026 honors (Rock Artist of the Year, Solo Artist of the Year).
