EAU CLAIRE, WI, UNITED STATES, August 24, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Taiwanese flutist Lin Hsiao-Feng has successfully concluded a 2026 tour of the United States that encompassed performances, lectures, and cultural exchanges centered on Taiwanese flute heritage, free improvisation, and contemporary cross-cultural music.
Lin, a Taiwan-based improvising flutist who also serves as Music Director of Lin's Culture in Taipei, traveled through Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin together with pianist and harpsichordist Hsuan Chang Kitano, who is based in the U.S. As Cadenza Duo, the pair offered programs that wove together Taiwanese bamboo flutes, xiao, Paiwan nose flute traditions, piano, and live improvisation.
The tour reached its conclusion at the 2026 World Flute Society Annual Convention held in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where Cadenza Duo was featured among the event's evening performers. Their set explored the interconnections between traditional Taiwanese instruments and contemporary improvisational approaches.
At the convention, Lin additionally gave a lecture on the Paiwan nose flute tradition of Taiwan, offering an international audience insights into its cultural context, musical traits, and modern-day relevance.
The World Flute Society convention gathered artists working in classical, jazz, world music, Indigenous traditions, improvisation, and contemporary performance. Lin took part in musical exchanges with flutists representing a variety of countries and musical backgrounds.
Cadenza Duo's performance at the convention also included Canadian flutist and composer Ron Korb, a two-time Grammy Award nominee who was named the World Flute Society's 2026 World Flutist of the Year. This collaboration was one of many impromptu musical exchanges that took place throughout the gathering.
Prior to heading to Wisconsin, Lin and Kitano staged three events in Washington, D.C. These included a free improvisation performance at Rhizome DC, a lecture and musical presentation at JF Books, and a cultural performance at the Chinese American Museum DC.
At JF Books, the duo introduced Taiwanese bamboo flutes, xiao, and the Paiwan nose flute alongside piano and improvisation. To close the event, they crafted an improvised piece inspired by the phrase "The wind has sound, freedom resonates," a reflection of Cadenza Duo's continuous investigation into real-time composition.
Throughout the U.S. tour, Lin concentrated on how Taiwanese flute traditions can enter contemporary and international performance settings while preserving their cultural identity. His work places traditional flute practices in dialogue with free improvisation, experimental sound, and cross-cultural collaboration.
Lin Hsiao-Feng is a Taiwanese improvising flutist, curator, and Music Director of Lin's Culture in Taipei. His practice bridges Taiwanese and multi-ethnic flute traditions, free improvisation, experimental music, and interdisciplinary performance. In 2024, he received the World Flutist of the Year award from the World Flute Society for his album Cadenza21 and was invited to perform at the Paris Cultural Olympiad.
Following his 2026 U.S. tour and appearance at the World Flute Society Annual Convention, Lin continues to develop international projects that explore Taiwanese flute traditions, improvisation, and cross-cultural musical exchange.
